Dialogue on Environmental Code sought

First issue of Forum Umweltgesetzbuch series published

The federal government would like to submit the first part of an Environmental Code (German: UGB) as early as this legislative period. The Environmental Code seeks to unify and simplify environmental law which has up to now been quite fragmented.  The Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) are accompanying the development with a new series of publications titled Forum Umweltgesetzbuch [Forum Environmental Code].  Subsequent editions will feature opinions and viewpoints on the Environmental Code submitted by authors representing federal and Laender policy, the private sector, environmental associations, scientific circles, and law enforcement authorities.

A large-scale environmental law project such as UGB can only be carried out successfully in an open dialogue with experts and stakeholders. The objective of the publications series is first and foremost to provide food for thought in the discussion about the aims, design, and limitations of an environmental code.

The first volume provides a good introduction to the issue of an environmental code.  Its 52 pages document the Herausforderung Umweltgesetzbuch [Challenge: Environmental Code] conference which the BMU and UBA hosted in February 2007, where renowned guests from political and scientific circles discussed the framework and key issues of the Environmental Code.

Forum Umweltgesetzbuch may be ordered or downloaded on the Internet at http://www.umweltdaten.de/publikationen/fpdf-l/3297.pdf. More information available at http://www.umweltgesetzbuch.de.
