The aim of the conference was to revitalise the discussions on a harmonised communication about VOC emissions. A harmonised classification and declaration approach belong to essential elements of improving the protection level for humans and the environment and ensuring healthy buildings.
The conference provided a brief overview of the current policy framework, the state of play regarding harmonisation in the area and outlined the action need regarding the communication on VOC emissions from construction products. More than 100 participants from the national authorities, universities, research institutes and NGOs engaged in the health protection and emissions of building products took part from countries all over EU.
In the speeches of the first day, up to date background information was provided on why VOCs are critical in indoor air. Further presentations clarified what parameters and methods are suitable and available to determine and evaluate VOC emissions from construction products. In stakeholder inputs the currently missing information on VOCs was seen as a major barrier for healthy building.
On the second day the application of Building Information Modelling regarding VOCs was explained and a concrete proposal for VOC emission classes was introduced. At the concluding panel discussion, both the need for a quick solution and the necessity to find consensus were highlighted. Everyone agreed that a delegated act on harmonised VOC communication would be most welcome.
