The first phase of the Federal Ecodesign Award (Bundespreis Ecodesign) kicks off on 13 January 2014. The Federal Ministry of Environment (BMUB) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) are announcing the award for the third time with the slogan of “Grüne Innovation kommt weiter” (Green innovation makes headway). The award is given to products, services and concepts which are especially convincing in terms of their ecological and design quality and which promote environmentally conscious consumption. Businesses of any size and in all sectors, designers and students can make online entries for the prize until 14 April 2014.

The Federal Ecodesign Award is given in four competition categories. Products and market-ready prototypes for the German market are awarded in the ‘product’ category. Pathbreaking concepts, studies and pilot projects can be submitted in the ‘concept’ category. Prizes in the ‘service’ category go to outstanding services and system solutions. Students and graduates can submit entries in the ‘young design’ category.

Competition entries must convince the interdisciplinary jury of their innovativeness, high quality design and excellent environmental properties. A panel of experts whose members are experts at the Federal Environment Agency and members of the Advisory Council assist the jury in its evaluation of the entries. The International Design Center Berlin e.V. (IDZ) has been commissioned with the job of development and implementation of the contest. Entries are assessed according to criteria jointly developed by the BMUB, UBA and IDZ. These criteria and further background information about ecodesign are available on the Federal Ecodesign Award website. The online exhibition of the winners of the previous two years might act as a stimulus for new contestants.

The award-winning entries of 2013 can be admired in a travelling exhibition. The exhibition will open in Ludwigsburg in February; further stops on the tour are planned.
