UBA today officially opened the National Centre for Environmental and Nature Conservation Information in Merseburg, Saxony-Anhalt. The team, currently consisting of eleven people, will grow to 25 employees by the end of 2024. Their task will be to set up the umwelt.info internet portal. Slow-to-degrade, mobile and partly toxic chemicals, so-called PMT/vPvM substances, can endanger our water resources over a long period of time. That is why the German Environment Agency – in line with the European chemicals regulation REACH – is calling for emissions of such substances into the environment to be minimised. When in operation, the building will be entirely self-sufficient in renewable energy – through photovoltaics and a heat pump. In addition, environmentally compatible building materials such as recycled concrete and insulation with renewable raw materials were used.
