Conference: Non-financial reporting in Germany

As part of the German EU Council Presidency, the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the German Environment Agency host a virtual conference on corporate non-financial reporting. The event will include high-level key notes, a presentation of current research results and a panel discussion with representatives from the European Commission, business and finance representatives, among others.

Since 2017 approximately 500 German companies have to adhere to extended non-financial reporting requirements. Evaluation studies show that the new reporting obligation does currently not lead to the disclosure of relevant, reliable and comparable information on the sustainability performance and risks of companies. A project commissioned by the German Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment confirms this finding specifically to reporting on climate and environmental matters. To close the gaps in current reporting practice, the European Commission works on a revision of the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (Directive 2014/95/EU - NFRD).

Key questions for the conference "With transparency to sustainable management - Non-financial reporting in Germany - Implications for the amendment of the European CSR Directive", that has its focus on reporting on environmental matters, are:

  • What does current non-financial reporting in Germany look like?
  • Does the reporting practice meet the requirements and expectations on behalf of (financial) actors?
  • What are the implications for the further development of the NFRD?

The event will be held in German and English with simultaneous translation.
