EXPO 2015 Milano showcases concrete answers to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium. A core issue which has to be addressed in respect is the massive amount of food that is wasted every year. In fact, we face a situation where on a global scale about one third of the food produced for human consumption annually – that is about 1.3 billion tones – is never eaten! The global food wastage has severe environmental consequences such as for the climate, water and land use as well as biodiversity. Germany´s food losses alone cause about four percent of the country´s total greenhouse gas emissions.

The event will be opened by UBA President Maria Krautzberger; followed by key note speeches and an open roundtable discussion with James Lomax (UNEP); Vinzenz Jung (Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture); Lorenzo Ciccarese (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research Italy) as well as Barbara Friedrich and Michael Angrick (UBA); Susanne Braun (Project Partner of EU FUSIONS and Managing Director of Research Center for Bioeconomy, Uni Hohenheim); Francesco Mele (Slowfood Italy); Valentin Thurn (Director of the documentary “Taste the Waste”); as well as a delegation of young decision makers (CIPRA – Youth Alpine Express). After the discussion, there will be a public screening of „Taste the Waste“ in the public area of the German Pavilion.

We would be delighted if you would join us in Milano on 9th June.
