Click to enlargePublic institutions organise a high number of meetings, conferences and similar events each year. Such events might have a very different impact on the environment. Environmental matters and far-reaching aspects of sustainability should therefore be involved in the planning and organisation of events at an early time.
The "Guidelines on Sustainable Event Organisation" issued by tha German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the German Environment Agency provides recommendations on how events can be organised in an environmentally friendly, socially compatible and economic manner. The recommendations given in the Guideline range from connections to the local public transport system via the selection of sustainably produced products up to the environmental management of hotels and conference centres.
Even social matters such as physical accessibility for disabled persons are taken into account besides environmental aspects.
Digital checklists are also available for practical implementation.
