Regional appraisal of climate change and the development of climate protection and adaptation strategies in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reservation region

Background and Goals

As a model region for sustainable regional development, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Schaalsee wishes to make an active contribution to climate protection by testing sustainable land use and resource management forms for the region. A project entitled "Regional appraisal of climate change and the development of climate protection and adaptation strategies in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reservation region" was commissioned in order to implement the topic of climate protection in all planning, decision processes and actions in the long term, and to develop and implement corresponding projects for climate protection and adaptation to climate change. This study builds on the projected climate effects of an earlier study carried out at state level, entitled "Climate protection and the consequences of climate change in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania", by the Ministry for the Economy, Labour and Tourism (2008), with regard to the regional climate changes. The study is available in an unedited version and as a short summary. The short summary is available on the internet.

Objectives

  • Audit regarding the most important climate-sensitive spheres of action in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reservation region;
  • Clarification/regionalisation of the state-level study ("Climate protection and the consequences of climate change in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania") and illustration of the effects of the climate change on the biosphere reservation region;
  • Derivation of regional recommendations for action on climate change and climate adaptation for climate-sensitive spheres of action;
  • Derivation of key projects on the basis of regional recommendations for action;

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Approach and results

Use of the regional climate model REMO (MPI for Meteorology, Hamburg) and the statistical model WETTREG (CEC Potsdam GmbH); Scenario A1B

Time horizon
  • short term = next year’s / decades
Further times

2050-2100

Step 2a: Identify and assess risks - climate effects and impact

Approach and results

Regional analysis and evaluation of the climate situation on the basis of existing climate data and regional analysis and evaluation of the climate situation and future climate trends for the biosphere reservation region with regard to the climate-sensitive spheres of action.

Step 2b: Identify and assess risks - Vulnerability, risks and chances

Urgency and priorization of adaptation needs

Identification of key projects and urgent recommendations for action in the long (unedited) version of the study

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

Development of adaptation strategies for the key climate-sensitive spheres of action (particularly water management, agriculture, forestry, tourism, nature and landscape conservation)

Time horizon
  • 2036–2065
  • 2051–2080 (far future)
  • 2071–2100 (far future)
