klimazwei - research for climate protection and protection against climate impacts

Background and Goals

Climate change is increasingly influencing our actions in society, the economy and politics. As a serious development factor it presents us with big tasks, worldwide as well as in our own country. As part of the Federal Government's High-Tech Strategy 2020, the BMBF therefore promotes research and development of technologies and strategies for dealing with climate change. The goal is to be better able to assess and mitigate the risks arising from climate change, but also to recognize and develop opportunities for society and the economy.
The research program "klimazwei - research for climate protection and protection against climate impacts" is a key contribution here and on the part of the BMBF the first funding measure, which deals explicitly with the topic "dealing with climate change". It focuses on promoting application-oriented research and development geared to societal and economic needs in relation to climate. The underlying concept has a twofold goal: to mitigate climate change (mitigation) caused by human action and adaptation to climate change and extreme events (adaptation). With klimazwei the new research policy priorities are taken into account by developing a wide range of measures both for the protection of the climate from the effects of man and for the protection of humans from climatic effects and extreme weather.
