Networking Municipalities – Strengthening peer learning among municipalities and enhancing adaptation capacities

Background and Goals

In the project "Networking municipalities", learning and exchange processes in the field of climate adaptation were established together with municipal actors. The focus was on the question of which peer learning approaches and methods are suitable for mainstreaming adaptation. In three municipal adaptation networks, "pioneer municipalities" met municipalities that are still in the early stages of adaptation. In this way, experiences could be exchanged and knowledge passed on.

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Time horizon
  • short term = next year’s / decades

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

Based on the support of 3 regional networks on the topic of climate adaptation, peer learning approaches were used to anchor climate adaptation at the municipal level and subsequently proposals were developed for the replication of suitable approaches as well as for funding by the federal, state and municipal governments. During the network activities, the development of visions and the identification of possible adaptation measures were promoted on the basis of peer learning.

More time information and explanations

The time horizon relates tot he networking activities, not to actual adaptation measures

Conflicts / synergies / sustainability

Synergies and sustainability: Integration of climate adaptation into existing climate protection networks to share existing structures and personnel, with less risk of discontinuation after the end of the project.
