Regional and sectoral adaptation

Climate change has different implications for different sectors and regions. Therefore, specific local and regional adaptation measures should be developed and implemented. In order to be able to search for adaptation strategies or specific adaptation measures as precisely as possible, we offer the option of calling up information on the individual federal states OR the various fields of action of the German Adaptation Strategy (DAS) using the search function below.

Regional adaptation

The federal states have an important role when it comes to assessing regional climate change, climate risks and adaptation options. All states have therefore started to address the issue of climate change adaptation. Some have already published their own adaptation strategies and action plans or are currently working out such strategies.

Sectoral adaptation

Sectoral adaptation measures depend on the specific requirements and climate risks of the individual sectors, the so-called fields of action. Although the German Adaptation Strategy has taken an integrated approach, it also addresses the importance of sectoral approaches in order to develop targeted adaptation measures.

The information on the possible adaptation measures comes from the 2021 climate impact and risk assessment for Germany.

If you are particulary interested in the Climate Impacts for a sector or a region, you can find them in the Climate Impacts Germany section.

Adaptation: Field of Action Transport

Traffic jam

Transport systems and the associated infrastructure are classified as critical infrastructure and are of great importance for the functionality of society. For their protection and preservation, technical adaptation measures to climate change are considered particularly relevant in order to prevent damage. This also requires the overarching adaptation of planning and building standards. read more

Adaptation: Field of action finance and insurance sector

Climate change increases the business risk of banks and insurance companies. With the help of active management, however, climate-related risks can be largely contained, opening up new business opportunities. In addition, the finance and insurance industry can create incentives for adaptation measures through product design, investment decisions and risk reporting. read more

Adaptation: Field of Action Energy Sector

The energy transition is a central step in adapting the energy industry to climate change. Further measures are necessary to reduce the demand for cooling energy and to secure the energy supply even under extreme weather conditions. read more

Adaptation: Field of Action Civil Protection

In order to adapt to the impacts of climate change, civil protection organisations can above all revise their internal structures and processes. New ways of communication and education about possible hazards can also help to mitigate negative consequences of climate change and create awareness of climatic changes. read more

Adaptation: Field of Action Building Industry

Climate-adapted building will become increasingly important in the future. In addition to technical measures to protect buildings against flooding and heat, urban planning plays a particularly important role. The promotion of urban green spaces and the sustainable use of rainwater are important measures for adaptation. read more
