Making everyday life more sustainable and inspiring friends and family – the German Environment Agency’s (UBA) mobile game “Little Impacts” shows how this can be achieved. In five interactive chapters, players experience how the main character Leah and her cousin Mailin inspire the people around them to embrace sustainability. The game has now been honoured with the German Children’s Software Award TOMMI in the “Education” category. While the nominations were selected by an expert jury of renowned journalists, scientists and educators, a jury of 3,767 children and young people decided on the winners.

The young people’s jury had this to say: “Little Impacts wins the TOMMI because it is the right game at the right time. Topics such as climate action and the environment concern us in any case, and with this visual novel we learn more about how everyone can make a contribution to a better world. It’s exciting to read the story, even if there is sometimes a bit too much text. But you can also do cool things like draw posters, which brought the story to life. The style was really cool.”

This is how the children’s jury explained their choice: “Little Impacts wins the TOMMI because it’s a game about the environment and climate protection. We play Mailin, who only eats vegan food, takes care of the environment and also goes to demonstrations. The story has an important message; we can all do something to help the environment! It was exciting to learn more about climate protection, even if we had to read a lot, which was a bit of an effort. But we learned how we can help others, for example friends and family.”

Little Impacts has been available for free in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store since April 2024. It belongs to the “Serious Games” genre. These are games that are entertaining but also pursue other goals – for example, to impart knowledge or motivate players to take certain actions. To achieve this, typical game elements such as fun, competition and an attractive game world are combined with additional components such as educational content.

Little Impacts was developed on a scientific basis as part of the research project “Potential of Serious Games as an instrument for promoting sustainability”. In this project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), on behalf of the German Environment Agency (UBA), researched, among other things, the diverse potential of game-based approaches for creating an awareness of sustainability. The game was developed by the development studio Quantumfrog.
